The Borromeo Islands
Before any other attraction, those who come to Lake Maggiore must visit the Borromeo Islands: the lush terraces of Isola Bella, the restaurants and the enchanted village of Isola dei Pescatori, the natural oasis of Isola Madre.
The Borromeo Islands can be visited from mid-March to the end of September by embarking from Stresa.

Villa Taranto
Pallanza is famous for the splendid Villa Taranto, in whose park an evocative botanical garden develops: depending on the time of year, you can immerse yourself in explosions of azaleas, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, camellias and, surrounded by ancient trees, you can admire splendid seasonal exhibitions of flowers, magnificent the one with tulips in April.

Santa Caterina del Sasso
On the Lombard side of Lake Maggiore, a few minutes by boat from Stresa, stands the monastic complex of Santa Caterina del Sasso. The enchanting position overlooking the lake, the history and the works preserved in its buildings make it one of the most beautiful religious monuments in Verbano. Give yourself the luxury of strolling under the porticoes of the church while contemplating the Piedmont side of the lake.

Colosso di San Carlo
The second tallest bronze statue after the Statue of Liberty in New York, Colosso of San Carlo, or San Carlone, dominates Lake Maggiore between Arona and Meina from a height of 36 metres. In addition to climbing the internal steps to enjoy the panorama through his eyes, you can visit the entire surrounding religious complex, entirely dedicated to the cardinal and saint Carlo Borromeo.

LAKE ORTA
Half an hour from Lake Maggiore, heading west you come across Lake Orta, a mirror of water full of poetry that will enchant you with its traditional villages: in Pella, Omegna, San Maurizio d’Opaglio and even more in Orta San Giulio you will find an ancient flavor and a tranquility able to regenerate you. Do not miss the Sacro Monte di Orta in whose chapels the life of San Francesco d’Assisi is represented.

Angera and its Rocca represent an unmissable visit for those who want to fully enjoy the atmosphere of Lake Maggiore. Reachable in 5 minutes by boat from Arona, Angera welcomes tourists with beaches, lawns and lakefront restaurants. From the center of the village, it is easy to go up to the Rocca, one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Europe.

The northern part of Lake Maggiore on the Piedmont side hosts some characteristic villages that bring tourists closer to the Swiss territory. Among these, Cannero Riviera is famous for its very long beach and for the ruins of the Borromeo castles floating on islets a few meters from the shore. A little further north, Cannobio offers a beautiful historic center closed to traffic and a lakefront full of charm.

Just 3 km from Meina, Arona offers you a splendid lakeside promenade, equipped beaches and the suggestive Rocca. Fashionable shops, cafés and restaurants for all tastes overlook the main street closed to traffic. The largest wild area in Europe hides priceless treasures for hiking enthusiasts: dense woods, waterfalls, streams, mountain pastures and large clearings overlook Lake Maggiore and Mergozzo magnificently. And on the many paths it is not uncommon to meet chamois, fallow deer, falcons that further enrich your experience in the unspoiled nature of the Val Grande.

The Toce waterfall
The Toce waterfall is located at the northern end of Val Formazza, about an hour and a half from Meina. Set in a decidedly alpine landscape, it offers an imposing waterfall that can be admired by approaching on foot from below or by standing on the suspended bridge at its top. The Toce waterfall is an excellent solution to cool off from the summer heat of the lake.

Stresa is the pearl of Lake Maggiore: just 15 minutes from Meina, you can admire marvelous late 19th-century hotels, stroll along the lakefront overlooking the Borromeo Islands and get lost in the internal alleys up to the central square, full of tradition and warmth. From Stresa you can embark to visit the Borromeo Islands and the most interesting villages of Lake Maggiore.

Orrido of Sant’Anna
Among the small gems of Lake Maggiore, Orrido of Sant’Anna stands out. Easily reachable from Cannobio following the Cannobino river, it is a place suspended in time where nature and human ingenuity blend harmoniously: the gorge carved into the rock, the ancient bridge that surmounts it and the church that dominates it overlook the pebble beach along the bend of the river.

Sasso del Ferro offers one of the most striking and sweeping panoramic views of Lake Maggiore: you can reach this 1,000-metre mountain with a 25-minute trip by cable car starting from Laveno, on the Lombard side of the lake. The climb is steep and exciting but, once at the top, the effort is rewarded because the show is truly breathtaking.

Among the Vergante hills, the Mottarone suddenly appears, a 1,500-metre mountain that lends itself to many activities: walks and picnics in the summer, skiing, snowshoeing and bobsleigh descents in winter. All framed by the spectacular panorama of Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta and Monte Rosa. You can reach Mottarone by car from Stresa.
